Our Statement Concerning WTO
We, Kansai Yotsuba Association, in Osaka, Japan, express our opposition
to the WTO’s destructive policy which puts corporates’ private profits
before people and the environment. And we also express our solidarity
and friendship to people who come here in Hong Kong to protest the WTO.
We have been engaged in activities of producing and delivering safe food
and also of linking directly producers and consumers. Through these activities
we have developed the awareness that without the preservation and sustainment
of the lively natural environment it is impossible to keep on our activities
of production and delivery of safe food.
Every food is a form of life nurtured by the nature and land. But to the
commodity economy system which dominates the world , food is nothing but
a tool for profit-making. Even the nature itself is being in the process
of commodification. As a result of the Globalization whose only value
is the maximization of profit, the nature all over the world, even the
earth itself, is now facing the serious existential crisis. The one who
has caused this global crisis is the WTO.
We think that every place in the world has its own natural environment
and that a form of agriculture suitable for the regional climate has developed
and has been passed from generation to generation historically. We have
the right to produce our basic food according to our cultural, historical
and productive diversity. This is the right for food sovereignty. We argue
that it is the best for people to have food produced in the natural environment
where they are born and live. This is the fundamental natural human way
of living and this is the one the trade program being promoted by the
WTO is shaking and destroying for corporate selfish profit. We resent
The trade program being negotiated and decided among a few powerful governments
for the sake of their corporate profit destroy every historically-developed
regional agriculture and the nature. We are furious at it. We think we
have to find and create alternative ways through cooperation of independent
regional people in order to break through the crisis.
We demand the participants to the ministerial meeting of the WTO would
listen seriously to the voices of ours and others coming here to protest.
We express our will of solidarity to people who come here to protest the
